The Museum has partnered with nearly 80 kindergarten through fifth grade teachers from the Dallas Independent School District through an innovative teacher support program called Leaders in Science (LIS). The goal of this partnership is to provide the teachers with tools and skills to better ignite their students' curiosity and enthusiasm for science.
LIS is designed to ensure teachers have the competence to know what to teach, the creativity to know how to teach it, the confidence to monitor and assess their work, and the consistent support provided by the LIS program to continually learn and adapt their teaching styles. LIS fosters peer-to-peer dialogue and provides direct teacher support in the forms of hands-on activity materials, free access for LIS teachers to museum exhibits, and a variety of other resources. School lessons can be enhanced both inside and outside of the classroom through a 4-day summer professional development institute, in-school programs and Museum visits from experienced science educators.
Sponsorships from United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, The Dallas Citizens Council, AT&T, Boone Family Foundation, HEB/Central Market, TI Foundation and The Beck Group make these key components of the Leaders in Science program possible.
Leaders in Science began in the summer of 2010 with 45 fifth grade teachers from 20 DISD elementary schools. In 2011, the United Way and the Dallas Citizens Council offered their generous support to expand LIS to 80 teachers at 20 participating campuses.
