July 23 |
| We moved camp to Kikak. Along the way we met up with Kevin May and his daughter Lizzie, so now our crew is complete. The river is the lowest that Roland or Dave have ever seen; as a result, progress upriver has been extremely slow. At one point it took us close to an hour to make a half-mile because of all the shoals.
Along the way we saw a seal in the river, which was a bit surprising given how far upriver we are: about 65 miles from Nuiqsut (which is about 15 or 20 miles inland). We saw the usual assortment of caribou, and were treated at lunchtime by seeing three musk ox. The musk ox took up a defensive pose with heads turned to us; they were packed shoulder-to-shoulder. There were ice wedges in the ground everywhere along the river. Camp is on yet another river bar, and the cliffs are much higher here, more like 100 feet, compared with about 60 feet at Poverty Bar. Here the bluffs are very unstable, and there is an almost steady sound of rockslides. There are bear tracks everywhere. |
